If I had to rank the order of my meal preferences, brunch would definitely be near the top of the list. This meal is so special that you have to wait until the weekend to actually enjoy it. And that’s exactly what I did today.
My roommate, her sister, and I indulged in brunch at Sonsie’s on Newbury Street. It’s one of those spots that’s perfect for people watching and delicious food. There’s no rush to eat fast and get out, rather the emphasis is on taking in the moment, savoring a good meal with good company. I had only been here for dinner so was excited to see what their brunch menu would be like.
The dilemma I face at brunch is always the same. I want to eat just about everything on the menu and I have a hard time deciding between the sweet or savory route. I want both. (Quick tip, if you are really starving and have the same desire for both sweet and savory, go to Johnny D’s in Davis Square. In addition to the live jazz, they have a brunch combos section on their menu that lets you get the best of both worlds. You will definitely leave feeling like you ate way too much though. So, don’t plan on going clothes shopping afterwards.) Anyway, back to Sonsie’s.
After much debate while sipping on a lovely cup of coffee, I went with the thin crepe, fresh berries, lemon crème fraiche, maple syrup. And am I ever glad I did! It was sensational. I think my favorite component of the dish was the lemon crème fraiche. And look, how stunning is that plating? If there were a brunch round on Chopped, there’s no way the judges could chop this dish.
And to make things even more perfect, we ordered a side of bacon for the table (yes, it was extra crispy). That bacon, along with the classic bloody mary I ordered, gave me just the right amount of savory to balance out my meal.
I experienced pure bliss at brunch today, and that’s a wonderful feeling.
